The history and symbolism in both Hinduism and Buddhism of the lotus flower dates back thousands of years. Considered a symbol of spiritual enlightenment and rebirth, as well as purity of spirit, mind and body, the lotus' roots are mired in the mud at the bottom of the pond, yet the lovely flowers rise above the water every day, opening unmarked and clean – a symbol of purity and detachment.
