Jamdani is a fine, hand-woven cotton textile traditionally made in and around Dhaka, in what is now Bangladesh, though it's also woven in parts of West Bengal, India. It's woven on a traditional loom using an extra-weft technique, where the pattern threads are added by hand during weaving, rather than printed or embroidered afterwards, so the design becomes part of the fabric itself rather than sitting on top of it.

The technique is prized for producing a sheer, lightweight muslin base overlaid with intricate geometric, floral or paisley motifs, traditionally in white-on-white but also done in contrasting colours. It's painstaking work: a length of fine jamdani can take weeks or months to weave by hand.

Jamdani has a long history going back centuries, tied closely to the muslin trade of Bengal, and is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage textile. It's most commonly seen today in saris, though the fabric and technique are also used for scarves and other pieces, and in this case, lovely, lightweight dresses.

As each piece is made individually there may be some slight variation.

All pieces are handmade locally with love and care in Bangalore, India hence each unique kaftan may vary slightly from the next. Fabric colours also may vary from the photos and from batch to batch as this is a handmade process.
