Product Description

Indonesia has been the home of hand made batik for many generations. The designs have been influenced by local culture and custom without significant changes over many decades of production. Because of this, demand by the younger generation has decreased as they see it as something not appropriate for their age group.

Warwick Purser, an expat Australian with honorary Indonesian citizenship and a man of great reknown as a designer and style icon, was asked by groups of batik makers in his local village to develop new designs more appropriate  for the younger, more contemporary market.

The process remains the same: drawn by hand, covered in wax and dipped in vats of dye. These new designs have been enthusiastically received and are now sold in the boutiques of many of Bali's 5 star hotels, including Aman, Bulgari, Four Seasons and others. And now, Merchant Campbell has brought these to Australia.

A bit about viscose

Viscose is made from renewable plants and is a great lightweight material that drapes well and has a lustrous finish, making pieces appear more luxurious. A viscose blend will help to combat the creasing issue. This versatile fabric is breathable and absorbent. Great for hot weather

Lightweight viscose is popular in sustainable clothing that depends on a beautiful drape. It falls smoothly and softly, and unlike many synthetics, it is very resistant to static cling.

Viscose is derived from the cellulose (or, wood pulp) from fast growing, regenerative trees such as eucalyptus, beech, and pine. This cellulose material is dissolved in a chemical solution to produce a pulpy viscous substance, which is then spun into fibres that can then be made into threads.

Another variation of viscose is bamboo viscose, which is made in the same way using cellulose derived from the bamboo plant.

The easiest, and preferred, way to wash viscose is by hand using a mild detergent, because it can maintain the quality of the fibre while saving energy. There's no need to use fabric softener because viscose is naturally soft. To maintain the fabric's texture, strength and colour, wash viscose in cold water.

Handwashing this fabric at home will help prevent viscose fabric from shrinking, and keep it long-lasting, too.
