Product Description

Riding on the success of our larger leather-bound journals with quotes, say hello to our nifty, smaller leather bound journals with quotes!  Perfect to cart around with you, in your bag or on your person!

Merchant Campbell sources our paper products from a family-owned business in the heart of the fabric making area of Jaipur. In the villages and district around Jaipur in India, the traditional fabric industry is a major employer. People are employed in indigo dying, block printing, block-print carving, fabric weaving and more. And, interestingly, they're also employed in the handmade paper industry because the paper that's made around Jaipur is cotton paper, which uses cotton waste from the cotton fabric industry.

The fifth generation family business which makes these journals has introduced the traditional village art of paper-making to the global community. Recognised by the Indian Government for its services to regional communities and awarded for its eco-friendly business, this is essentially a family business with a great emphasis on the environment, recycling, high-quality products and its staff – which gets a big tick from us. The leather used to cover the journals is also tanned locally, by artisans who've learnt their trade from their fathers, and their fathers before them.

Any irregularities are characteristics of handcrafted and recycled origins. It is only natural that occasional variances in colour, grain, texture and consistency occur. The originality of the leather, paper and slightly distressed finish is what makes these journals beautiful.

The quotes:

EE Cummings quote, "Your head is a living forest full of songbirds", symbolizes a mind that is vibrant, creative, and overflowing with thoughts and ideas. The phrase highlights a natural, untamed, and musical inner life, emphasizing a sense of wonder and mental freedom.   Edward Estlin Cummings was an American poet, painter, essayist, author, and playwright. During World War I, he worked as an ambulance driver and was imprisoned in an internment camp, which provided the basis for his novel The Enormous Room.

"To do the useful thing, to say the courageous thing, to contemplate the beautiful thing: that is enough for one man's life" is a famous quote from T.S. Eliot's The Use of Poetry and the Use of Criticism. It highlights a philosophy of living a meaningful, intentional, and balanced life.

I saw that my life was a vast glowing empty page and I could do anything I wanted.”― Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums.   Along with Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, Kerouac defined the 1950s Beat movement, which rejected conventional, suburban American life in favour of spiritual exploration, jazz, drugs, and travel.

And Bob Dylan's words "Who am I helping, what am I breaking, what am I giving, what am I taking" is a mantra to live by" were an ode to his great mentor, Woody Guthrie, and another mantra to live by.
