We've sourced this collection directly from a coop of women potters with ceramic skills that have been passed down through generations on the island of Lombok, Indonesia.

Lombok black pottery is known for its natural ability to heat evenly, and to retain heat for long periods of time - they can be used on gas or electric stovetops, as well as the oven and microwave. More about Lombok black pottery:

We love that in supporting this coop, we are helping Lombok's village women to supplement their income, putting healthier food on their tables and ensuring they can afford to keep their children at school beyond primary school.  It's a true cottage industry, where the women work from their homes so they can look after their children and husbands.

The women use clay, sand, water, cooking oil as their materials. The raw materials come from the hills near their villages. These hills have very unfertile soil, which is not good for agriculture. Artisans buy the materials from a man who collects the clay from the hill, using a special cart for pottery. One full cart of clay is used by four to five potters every two to three weeks. Before the raw material is ready for crafting, the potters prepare it by soaking it in water for two days, then filtering to remove materials like sand and small stones. Finally, the clay is mixed with sand and water to the right consistency until it is ready to use.

PIeces are made using a foot operated potter's wheel, and shaped and styled using tools like stones, bottles, knives, sharp bamboo and brushes. Finally, the pieces are fired in a traditional kiln fueled with dry leaves, wood and coconut husks.  It's this process that gives the black pottery its colour.
