Product Description

Michaela lives in regional NSW in the high country about half an hour south of Canberra.

She has been creating art in many different mediums for most of her life. The medium she currently works in is coloured pencil, watercolour and gouache. In a way, coloured pencils are like paint and artists who use them often talk about painting with coloured pencils. The pencils are made of pigmented wax or oil and are applied in meticulous layers or glazes which are blended to create a rich glow. The other feature of coloured pencils is that very fine details can be achieved. It is a time consuming but very meditative process.

Michaela is surrounded by the Australian countryside of big hills, rugged terrain, and big skies. Her delight each day is seeing the comings and goings of the many birds and animal species who visit her garden, dam and the creek with waterfalls and ponds throughout the year. Some of the birds who visit the objects are regulars throughout the year. Others are just passing through on their migrations for a rest, shelter and food. In her latest artwork, she has turned her attention to combining beautiful antique porcelain with the enchanting birds who visit her garden. She is looking within her world and life for inspiration.

This collection is titled ‘The Loved Objects’. These objects are from her home, her travels, window shopping and auction houses where they appear fleetingly, before heading off to a new home or custodian. Michaela creates magical still life arrangements by combining the things she loves - with the creatures she loves. A little whimsy is always thrown in just for fun.

Michaela has exhibited her work throughout Australia and Internationally, and has won numerous awards, particularly for her miniature art which is 10cm square or smaller.
